Facial Flushing and Redness.
Flushing is a condition with episodic attacks of redness of the skin which is often accompanied with a sensation of warmth or burning of the face, neck and less frequently the chest. It is more common in fair skin types. It can be episodic or constant and repeated attacks can lead to permanent redness and dilated small blood vessels (telangiectasias). It can be caused by rosacea, menopause, emotional situations, medications (certain blood pressure drugs, morphine and nitroglycerine), certain foods and beverages, stress, weather and physical activity. Some diseases of the thyroid and kidney can also cause flushing. Neuromodulators (Botox® Nuceiva® and Dysport®) injected into the skin in the area of redness can effectively relieve this symptom. Effects are seen within 2-3 weeks and can last up to 6 months. Repeat injections are necessary for continued benefit.
Alternative treatments can include hormone replacement therapy (menopause), propranolol, clonidine, naloxone, surgery, biofeedback and hypnosis.
Laser and intense pulse light can help with fixed facial redness and telangiectasias, but do not prevent occurrence of flushing attacks.
